A Tribute to Greta Magnusson-Grossman
July 14, 2018
Architect, furniture designer and interior decorator, Greta Magnusson-Grossman earned her badge of honor in the world of architecture by synthesizing European Modernism and Southern California lifestyle to what we fondly cherish as Los Angeles Modernism. In her favorite retreat, the Magnusson-Grossman Studio, she invented furniture and lighting products for sought-after furniture companies including Martin Brattrud and Sherman Bertram and Hollywood clientele Greta Garbo and Ingrid Bergman, among others. A unique trait of Magnusson-Grossman’s worldview is to play with architectural styles, model interior décor, and, then design furniture. This thinking is so intuitive; the final product is indistinguishable from the decor. As a tribute to the wonder woman, we’re proud to talk about some of her award-winning designs in this Furniture blog post.
Though considered a decade ahead of its time, when the 62 Series debuted in 1952, the 62 Series is immutable—the design is so distinctive it could still turn heads in 2162. Crafted with American walnut, black laminate and steel, the desk appears to float in the air with the slender legs balancing on wooden spheres. Characteristic of the mysteriousness of the future, the cabinet houses three
drawers, which are invisible to the casual onlooker.
Inspired by nature’s spectacle—the Cobra snake’s stance—the Cobra Lamp is one of Magnusson-Grossman’s most famous creations in the designer furniture industry. Winner of the Good Design Award and other accolades including a feature at the Good Design Show, hosted by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Cobra Lamp is a collector’s item. Set it up on a bed-side, study or work table, and twist the 360-turnable arm as you wish to create impressive lighting options.
An icon in the designer furniture world, the Grasshoppa lamp evokes sheer joy, even after seventy decades of existence. Akin to a grasshopper in the wild, the tripod frame tilts at an angle, while the arm curls around in a rectangle to grasp the conical shade. Unlike straight stands, clamps or overhead lamps, the Grasshoppa lamp is effortless in directing light with minimal glare.
