Pierre Paulin

Sculptural comfort

Pierre Paulin (1927–2009) began with ambitions in sculpture before turning to furniture. This background shaped his approach to seating as a volumetric problem rather than a structural one.

In collaboration with Artifort during the 1960s, Paulin developed icons using industrial materials, stretch fabrics, and foam. His influence extended to designing modern interiors for the Élysée Palace.

At Danish Design Co, Paulin is represented through GUBI, which has reintroduced his work as contemporary furniture. Pieces such as the Pacha Chair demonstrate the lasting appeal of his ideas.

Design Philosophy

Design from the body outward

Paulin started with posture and comfort, then built form around the human body rather than imposing the body onto rigid frames.

His work remains relevant because it prioritises ergonomics and innovation over surface styling.
