The difference is seat height. A counter stool has a seat height of approximately 60 to 65 centimetres, suited to a kitchen island or breakfast bar at standard counter height of 90 centimetres. A bar stool has a seat height of approximately 70 to 75 centimetres, suited to a bar or raised island at approximately 105 to 110 centimetres.
A bench on one side of a rectangular dining table accommodates more people per linear metre than individual chairs and removes the problem of chairs being left at angles around the room when not in use.
