A dresser is typically wider and lower than a chest of drawers, with a larger surface area on top that suits a mirror, lamp, or personal objects, making it as much a display and grooming surface as a storage piece.
The right height depends on how the piece is being used. A chest used as a surface for a mirror, lamp, or objects should sit at approximately 80 to 95 centimetres, a comfortable height for placing and retrieving items without bending. A dresser used as a vanity surface should sit at approximately 75 to 80 centimetres, suited to seated or standing use with a mirror above.
