Hotel Lilou, France

A harmony of design eras

In the historic center of Hyères near the Mediterranean coast, Hotel Lilou pairs a classic Haussmannian exterior with an interior that feels both nostalgic and contemporary. The design captures the elegance of the town’s early twentieth century golden age, when Hyères was a coveted Riviera escape for Europe’s well traveled visitors.

Owners David Pirone and Paris based studio Haddou Dufourcq have transformed the 1890 building into a 37 room retreat that layers art deco graphics, Palladian influences, and touches of tropical modernism. The expansive terrace and pool channel the mood of old Riviera holidays with a pergola, bespoke frescoes, and cabochon details, enhanced by pieces like Mathieu Matégot’s Tropique Dining Chairs. Indoors, Gabriella Crespi’s Bohemian 72 Sofas, Paavo Tynell’s 9602 Floor Lamp, and GamFratesi’s textured stone tables create a relaxed and atmospheric mix.

The restaurant and shared spaces continue this interplay of eras through materials and silhouettes. Rainer Daumiller’s sculptural pine armchairs, rattan and straw accents in lighting and seating, and the graphic interplay of lines and shapes contribute to an aesthetic that feels richly layered yet cohesive, uniting precision, craft, and the ease of alfresco Mediterranean living.
