Scandinavian Interior Design: A Journey to Creating Your Dream Home

Minimalist yet an inviting aesthetic, Scandinavian interior design has captured the worlds attention, focusing on functionality, simplicity and timeless beauty. Influenced by the culture and climate of Nordic countries, the style represents a modern, thoughtful approach to creating a living space. The core of this design ethic being, that form follows function. By using this design approach you can achieve a space that is not only beautiful but also practical and enduring.

Established in the early 20th centenary, Scandinavian design gaining recognition in the 1950s, and was heavily influenced by the region’s social and political climate. This movement made well designed, high quality products accessible to all, with designs focusing on functionality and durability, a reflection of the practical needs of daily life in the often harsh Nordic environments.

Iconic Danish designers like Alvar Aalto, Borge Mogensen, Arne Jacobsen, and Hans Wegner lead this movement, combining clean lines with organic forms. Using natural materials to create calming neutral tones, played a central role in the design philosophy, reinforcing a balance between beauty and functionality. Ensuring that furniture was designed to be both practical yet beautiful meant that Scandinavian furniture sat well in both classic interior settings and modern homes.

Baker Sofa

1. Baker Sofa

Each of Finn Juhls iconic designs have a backstory and the Baker Sofa is no different. Edgar Kaufmann Jr, who was a prolific art collector and director of the Industrial Design Department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York found a fast friend in Finn Juhl. He was so intrigued by Finn Juhls worldview on furniture design that he invited the designer to the United States. The same Art Collector then wrote an article on Finn Juhl, which was then later picked up by Mr. Hollis Baker, the owner of Baker Furniture. Mr. Baker invited Finn Juhl to design a furniture collection for him, which then paved the way to the now exclusive Baker Sofa.

My fiancée and I were searching for modern furniture pieces that not only look beautiful but also are practical. Danish Design ticked all the boxes – superb comfort and aesthetics value, a decent variety of different furniture lines, and staff who are willing to take their time to explain the pieces to you. For many of their sofa lines, they have a wide array of different fabrics (and colours) to suit your lifestyle (eg, warmer or cooler materials). We ended up getting a Bolia couch and a Skovby dining table – wish we had gotten more! Definitely will return again
