Each sofa type must be treated differently according to its materials, if you want it to maintain its appearance. A sofa will naturally change form and appearance over time. The upholstery on your sofa will change with use, so it’s important that you swap the cushions regularly to ensure even wear and use, as often as you can. Some sofas have reversible cushions, such as the Scandinavia sofa series, and it’s best to distribute the wear as much as possible.
Always start by treating your sofa with the right care product, which can be purchased from Danish Design Co. The right care product creates a protective layer, enhances the natural qualities of the material and sofa, and extends the life of your sofa. A care product typically holds for 6 months, so we recommend that you treat your sofa twice a year.
For example, a leather sofa may require more moisture and leather cream during the dry months.
Depending on your sofa material, read the sections below on Fabric or Leather materials, on this page to learn more about caring for your fabric / leather sofa.
Maintaining your Sofa
It is recommended you vacuum your sofa every week, at a low setting and with the soft mouthpiece, to prevent the filling from shifting and the fibres being pulled out during vacuuming. If possible, you should move the cushions before vacuuming, to ensure dust that falls between and under the seat cushions are vacuumed off too.
Sofas with Down
A sofa with down must be beaten hard and frequently. This will help ensure that the cushions don’t become flat and lose their shape. If your cushions have a zip, it’s a good idea to open the zip when beating them, as it will allow more air to enter.
Sofas with Foam
Bolia’s foam cushions undergo a special foam crushing process before they become a comfortable sofa. The foam crushing process ensures all the air bubbles in the foam are uniform, meaning the foam will keep its shape over many years. A foam sofa has a firmer type of comfort than a down sofa, but a foam sofa still needs to be beaten to make the cushions maintain their natural shape.
Wrinkles in the fabric
When you start using your new sofas, the fabric will seem relatively tight. After several uses, the fabric and the thin foam just below the fabric will expand relatively quickly, which can cause wrinkles on the fabric. This will typically happen within the first month, depending on how much furniture is used. The material will subsequently expand to a lesser extent.
To avoid too many wrinkles, the fabric should be smoothened lightly with your hand, so that any excess material can be redistributed across the cushion.
If your sofa is covered with wool fabric, the fabric will contract if you moisten a cloth with demineralised water, place it on the sofa and heat the towel with i.e. an iron at a low heat or a hair dryer. Alternatively, you can moisten a cloth and leave it on the wrinkles overnight. When the wool fabric dries, the wool fibres will contract once again. Wrinkles that occur as a direct result of use are normal.
Bolia’s upholstery fabrics are free of dangerous chemicals and almost all are certified according to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®. Read here how to care for and maintain your furniture, whether it is wool, velour, polyester or cotton.

Cotton Care and Maintenance
Always start by treating your cotton-upholstered furniture. It is best to use Bolia care products, and the product holds for about half a year, therefore it’s recommended that you treat the product twice a year, or as needed.
Cotton is made from natural fibres that are more sensitive to light and heat, and it’s not advisable to place the furniture in direct sunlight as it may cause fading over time. Lighter colours fade less than dark colours, so you should consider your colour selection and placement carefully. Look for the level of light fastness that indicates if the fabric can withstand more or less light. The higher the number, the better the fabric can withstand light and heat.
Wool Care and Maintenance
Always start by treating your wool-upholstered furniture. It is best to use Bolia care products, and the product holds for about half a year, therefore it’s recommended that you treat the product twice a year, or as needed.
It is natural for wool to form some minor wrinkles when used, as it is a stretchy natural material. If wrinkles have formed on your wool fabric, the fabric will contract if you moisten a cloth with demineralised water, then place it on the sofa and heat the cloth i.e. an iron at low heat or a hair dryer. Alternatively, you can moisten a cloth and leave it on the wrinkles overnight. When the wool fabric dries, the wool fibres will contract again.
Velour Care and Maintenance
Always start by treating your velour-upholstered furniture. Please note that due to the long pile, treating it once may not completely penetrate the fabric and it may be necessary to repeat the treatment. Remember that your furniture should be completely dry before using it after treatment.
Press marks may occur on the velour, where the pile has been pressed flat either during transportation or in use. This is normal for velour and is considered a defect. To help restore the original surface, you may use a clean, neutral-coloured piece of fabric that is warm and moist and lay it on top of the velour for an hour. The moisture helps to lift the pile again. You can also use a soft brush dampened with distilled water, but do not use too much water. Do not rub the velour. Light stroking is sufficient to restore the original surface again.
Polyester Care and Maintenance
Always start by impregnating your furniture. For this, we recommend our care products that have been developed, tested and approved for our polyester. If you impregnate your furniture later, it is important that you clean it thoroughly before using a care product for the first time. As a rule of thumb, a care product lasts about half a year, and we therefore recommend that you repeat the impregnation a couple of times a year or as needed.
Polyester and nylon fibres are durable and easy to maintain, and artificial fibres don’t fade to the same extent as i.e. natural fibres such as cotton. Polyester fabrics therefore have a high light fastness, which ensures superior durability.
If stains occur, you can use stain cleaner from Bolia’s own care product range, and if the fabric on your furniture is removable, we recommend that you place a clean tea towel between the fabric and the cushion’s filling to prevent the stain from penetrating the cushion fibres and causing long-term damage.
Bolia only uses traceable leather to ensure quality and transparency. The leather comes from European cattle and is meticulously checked for defects, pressure marks and other defects, to ensure only the highest quality for your furniture.
Please note that when you start using your new furniture, the leather will seem relatively tight. As it is a natural material, the leather will expand with use and leave small, natural folds, which will usually occur within the first month, depending on usage frequency. After which, the leather will subsequently expand to a lesser degree.

Leather Care and Maintenance
Always start by protecting your leather furniture with the right care product. For Quattro Traceable leather, it is recommended to use Bolia’s Leather Protection Creme, while for Austin nubuck, it is recommended to use Bolia’s Leather Protection Spray.
Please note that Austin nubuck is more light sensitive and will therefore change colour depending on how much light the surface is exposed to.
Leather is generally affected by the room it is in, and therefore heat, cold and light are important considerations. In turn, leather will stay soft and beautiful for many years if you treat it with proper care.
Maintaining Leather Furniture
It is recommended using a care product 2-4 times a year, which will help soften and protect the leather. In addition, you should wipe the furniture daily with a lint-free cotton cloth that has been well wrung in demineralised water.
Avoid spilling or dropping crumbs that contain greasy liquid or food, and never use washing up liquid, sulfo, solvents or other detergents on leather.
Wood is a natural, living material that is affected by its environment. Therefore, wood furniture reacts differently according to the room in which it is located. A dry room that’s very warm can cause the wood to dry out and contract, whereas a humid room can cause the wood to expand. Hence, it is important to treat your wood furniture often a few times a year, or whenever needed.

Maintaining Wood Furniture
Generally, a care product lasts half a year – but this depends on temperature fluctuations and how often the table is cleaned. When applying wood oil, you should apply the oil to the entire furniture, i.e. on a solid wood table, the oil should also be applied underneath the table top to ensure the piece of furniture is evenly cared for.
Daily Maintenance of Wood Furniture
A damp cloth should be used for daily cleaning, while more thorough cleaning can be done with Wood Cleaner, which is part of the Bolia Care Kit. The surface should always be wiped with a clean, dry cloth, and always wipe in the direction of the wood’s grain.
Veneer Wood Surfaces
Bolia veneer furniture is available with different surface treatments; please refer to the care instructions attached to each product. It is recommended to treat veneer surfaces with Bolia’s care products, specifically for their wood.
Fenix Laminate
Fenix laminate is an Italian laminate with a soft and sealed surface, and this prevents bacteria and dirt from settling on the surface. When you brush your fingers over the laminate table top, there will be no prints or streaks left behind.
High Pressure Laminate
HPL laminate is a high-pressure laminate that is tremendously resistant, making it ideal for both residential and commercial uses.

Marble Care and Maintenance
Marble is polished and due to its porous nature, it is not entirely closed and sealed on its surface. Once you’ve received your marble furniture, it is advised to treat it immediately with Bolia’s Marble Polish, which helps close the porous surface of the marble and protects the marble.

If you spill any liquids, it is important that you remove the stain immediately to ensure the liquid does not seep into the marble. You should also make sure to treat it with Bolia Marble Polish as needed.
The more often you wipe your marble surface, the more often you’ll need to treat it. If your furniture is prominently displayed in your home, you should treat it once a month. The care product creates a protective membrane that slowly gets washed off, which is why it needs to be maintained regularly.
Please note that marble furniture cannot withstand other acidic detergents. Therefore, if you spill something acidic on the surface, you should wash it off immediately. Marble also cannot withstand warm items, which is why we recommend you avoid placing hot plates, saucepans or other hot objects directly on the surface.
Stone Care
Bolia’s range of stone furniture includes terrazzo, quartz and concrete. The first two stone types are similar to each other, but the stone binder used in quartz is different to the one used to blend terrazzo, which means the care product has to be different.
Terrazzo, Quartz and Concrete Care and Maintenance
Terrazzo has a porous surface and requires Bolia Stone Sealer to treat it.
Quartz is polished and needs to be sealed with Bolia Marble Polish to ensure lasting durability.
Concrete needs to have its surface saturated to protect it. Bolia’s concrete furniture are all pre-treated at the fabrication plant, but it is recommended to treat the surface before, during and after use, to avoid the surface getting damaged. It is advised to use Bolia Stone Sealer for this.
All these three types of stone need regular care and daily cleaning with a clean, well-wrung cloth. Natural stone furniture generally cannot withstand acid or other acidic detergents. Therefore, wash any acidic materials off the surface immediately should any spills occur on the surface.
Wicker is made from natural, living materials that are affected by their environment, and will therefore according to the room’s condition. A dry room that is very warm can cause the wicker to dry out and contract, whereas a humid room can cause the wicker to expand. It is therefore important to consider where you place your wicker furniture, to ensure it retains its appearance.
Wicker Care and Maintenance
Generally, wicker furniture is easy to maintain, and wiping the furniture often with a clean, well-wrung cloth is enough to help extend its lifespan. The frequency you clean your designer wicker furniture depends on how often you use it and how prominent its position is in your home. If the furniture is displayed as a centrepiece in your home, you may need to clean it more regularly.
