Select the Perfect Side Table: Style and Functionality Guide

When choosing a side table for your living room, consider functionality, design, materials, colours, and the overall dcor style to ensure a cohesive look. Heres a detailed guide: So first to the basics: Distance from the Sofa The side table should ideally be placed about 18 inches 45 cm from the sofa, within easy reach. This gives you enough space to comfortably set items down without crowding the area. Height Recommendation The tables height should match the height of your sofas arm or be slightly lower. A typical height is between 2430 inches 6075 cm, which ensures practical use while maintaining aesthetic balance. Shape Options Round Tables: Soften a rooms layout and are great for smaller spaces or those with a more organic, fluid feel. They also encourage easier movement around the table. SquareRectangular Tables: Offer structure and work well in rooms with a more modern or geometric aesthetic. These are ideal if your space has clean lines and defined corners. Nesting Tables: Provide flexibility. You can stack them for a compact look or spread them out when more surface area is needed. Material Choices and Their Impact on Dcor Wood: Brings warmth and texture, making it versatile for many styles. Light Wood: Ideal for Scandinavian or minimalist interiors. For example, the Risom Magazine Side Table by Jens Risom, with its light wood finish, fits seamlessly in a light, airy dcor scheme. Dark Wood: Adds depth and richness, perfect for spaces with a more traditional or rustic feel. Dark wood contrasts nicely with neutral or vibrant colour palettes. Metal: Adds an industrial or contemporary edge. The TS Console Table with a metal base fits perfectly into minimalist or industrial spaces. The clean lines give a modern, utilitarian vibe while being sleek and unobtrusive. Polished or brushed metal finishes offer a more luxurious look, pairing beautifully with bold, rich tones or more monochrome palettes. Marble: A classic material for luxury, offering a highend finish that elevates any room. The TS Console Table with a marble top creates a lavish, opulent look. Marbles natural veining adds unique character to each piece, and the polished surface reflects light, enhancing a rooms sense of space and brightness. Pair marble with metallic accents or deep jewel tones to emphasize luxury or contrast it with lighter colours for a balanced look. Glass: Provides an airy, open feel, perfect for smaller spaces or those with modern decor. Clear or tinted glass creates a sense of openness while subtly blending into the background, allowing other elements of the room to stand out. Rattan or Woven Textures: Offer a natural, earthy feel, great for bohemian or coastal inspired spaces. Adding texture through rattan or woven tables can help soften more modern or industrial furniture, bringing a touch of warmth and nature indoors. Colour Choices for Different Looks Neutral Tones: Light woods, soft greys, and beige hues work well for a calm Scandinavian look. The Risom Magazine Side Table with its neutral wood finish offers versatility in almost any colour scheme. Bold Colours: If youre looking to make a statement, deep shades like emerald green, navy blue, or even black can create a focal point, especially when paired with a marble or metal table like the TS Console Table. Monochrome: For a modern minimalist look, go for black, white, or grey. The TS Console Table from Northern, in its minimalistic form, will add a sleek, unobtrusive accent to any monochrome room. Soft Pastels: For a more playful or midcentury vibe, light pastel colourslike soft blues, pinks, or yellowscan be a great addition, especially with wood or rattan pieces. And then to the fun parts selecting the right look for your chosen living room feel and theme: Minimalist/Industrial: The Mass table from Northern, with its clean lines and industrial materials, fits perfectly into both minimalist and industrial interiors. It adds sophistication without overwhelming the space, and its design pairs well with neutral or metallic color schemes. Versatile Décor: The Fredericia Risom or Pon tables are stunning designs that work with almost any décor. Their timeless craftsmanship and elegant forms blend seamlessly with both classic and contemporary settings. The clean wooden design can easily adapt to different styles and color schemes, making these tables versatile, long-lasting options. Luxury or Maximalist: If you’re aiming for a luxurious or even maximalist look, the Gubi TS marble table makes a bold statement. With a marble top and a refined metal base, this piece brings a rich texture that enhances an opulent vibe. It’s perfect for adding a touch of extravagance to your space, especially if paired with luxurious fabrics and deep colors like emerald or sapphire. Subtle Aesthetic: For a toned-down, more natural feel, the Ton table from Northern offers understated elegance. Its simple design balances function and subtlety, making it a perfect choice for a minimalist or organic aesthetic. It pairs beautifully with soft textures, neutral tones, and a more relaxed, calming atmosphere. By considering the height, distance from the sofa, shape, material, color, and the décor style you want to achieve, you can select a side table that not only fits your living room but enhances its overall design. Whether you’re after the sleek lines of the Mass table, the timeless elegance of the Fredericia Risom or Pon, the bold luxury of the Gubi TS, or the understated simplicity of the Ton table, these options offer a perfect balance of form and function. What others had to say
We fell in love with the skovby #33 table when we first saw it. It was made more amazing because we had just randomly wandered into Danish Design and the table met all our requirements with the unexpected benefit of expanding to cater for larger groups at parties. We waited in anticipation for this handcrafted table, and thanks to the team, we managed to get it before the expected wait time of 6 months and now it is a statement piece in our new place and we’ve received countless compliments on how special and well made this table is! Thank you Danish Design Co!

Danish Design has always been my go-to place for furniture shopping. They have the most fashionable but also timeless pieces. And while some are not cheap they are made with great quality. We bought our favourite dining walnut table that is ever so timeless but also the most versatile being able to sit 6 and up to 10-12 when we extend it. It is our third time renovating and we are taking this favourite piece w us in our move… and more importantly we always get great service from danish design even after many years.

My fiancée and I were searching for modern furniture pieces that not only look beautiful but also are practical. Danish Design ticked all the boxes – superb comfort and aesthetics value, a decent variety of different furniture lines, and staff who are willing to take their time to explain the pieces to you. For many of their sofa lines, they have a wide array of different fabrics (and colours) to suit your lifestyle (eg, warmer or cooler materials). We ended up getting a Bolia couch and a Skovby dining table – wish we had gotten more! Definitely will return again
